Buccal Swab Collection Instructions

How to start?

Instructions are available in the box OR at the video above. To start for an optimal sample collection, it’s ADVISABLE to brush your teeth for at least thirty (30) minutes [preferably one (1) hour] before using the buccal swab kit. AVOID eating after brushing your (including chewing gum) , drinking, smoking or using mouthwash.

Why must I brush my teeth & Wait 30 mins after?

Brushing helps remove food particles, bacteria, and other debris from your mouth, which can contaminate the DNA sample. This ensures that the swab collects mostly your cells and not unwanted material.

Waiting for 30 minutes after brushing your teeth before performing a buccal swab is recommended to minimise the risk of contamination from foreign substances like toothpaste and to ensure the accuracy of the DNA sample.

It also allows time for your mouth to return to its natural state, reducing the presence of these substances and ensuring that the swab collects a pure sample of your epithelial cells, which are needed for accurate DNA analysis.

What is ATCC ?

ATCC, known as Advancing Tomorrow’s Cure Community, is a community established to study how Asian genetics react to current medicines. Your deidentified sample will be stored indefinitely as anonymous specimens for the option of being able to update your report at the minimal cost after the first FOC update with joining the ATCC, as well as for research purposes. Only an identification specimen number will be used, ensuring the anonymity and privacy of your data. As for the possibility of research direction changes leading to activities related to cloning, Malaysia does not support human cloning therefore we will not be embarking on this area of research. Pharmacogenomics primarily focuses on understanding how an individual’s genetic makeup influences their response to drugs, optimising drug therapy based on genetic factors, and advancing personalized medicine. While research directions can evolve over time, the core focus of pharmacogenomics remains centered on drug response and genetic variability rather than cloning or genetic manipulation for other purposes.
