Understanding the Growing Cardiovascular Disease Burden

11 November 2025

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains one of the most significant and rising health challenges in Malaysia. Recent data highlight a worrying increase in cases and deaths from heart disease, underscoring the urgent need for personalized medical approaches to improve patient outcomes.

According to the Malaysian Department of Statistics, ischaemic heart disease is the second leading cause of medically certified deaths, accounting for 15.1% of deaths nationwide in 2024. The disease disproportionately affects adults aged 41 to 59, with men more impacted than women. In regions such as Labuan, 93 new cardiovascular cases were reported as of August 2025, with 1,388 patients currently receiving treatment for heart conditions. This trend reflects broader national challenges, driven by common risk factors including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy eating habits ¹.

Lifestyle Influences

Like many, Malaysians enjoy a rich and diverse diet filled with flavorful foods that are often high in salt, sugar, and saturated fats. Coupled with the year-end festivities and busy schedules, exercise routines can sometimes take a back seat—all factors that subtly contribute to increased cardiovascular risks over time. Recognizing these lifestyle influences helps foster understanding and encourages small, manageable changes towards heart health.

Institutions such as Malaysia’s National Heart Institute have observed a disturbing shift in patient demographics, with younger adults increasingly affected by coronary heart disease. This shift calls for more targeted and effective management strategies to prevent complications and improve quality of life ².

From Compromises to Solutions

One crucial aspect to tackle this challenge is improving medication efficacy and safety. Adherence to cardiovascular medications is often compromised by side effects, complex regimens, or inadequate treatment response. Here, pharmacogenomics is the study of how an individual’s genes affect their response to drugs plays a transformative role.

Our PRECISE Pharmacogenomics test offers a bespoke genetic screening solution that identifies variations influencing how patients metabolize cardiovascular medications. By understanding each patient’s genetic profile, healthcare providers can select the most effective drugs and doses, minimizing adverse effects and enhancing therapeutic outcomes.

Precise Pharmacogenomics

In a country facing a growing cardiovascular disease burden, personalized medicine informed by pharmacogenomics technology like PRECISE Pharmacogenomics is a timely tool. It helps clinicians move away from the “one size fits all” model toward precision prescribing that matches treatment to the individual’s genetic makeup.

As Malaysia faces rising cardiovascular risks, it is critical to combine lifestyle interventions, routine screening, and advanced tools like pharmacogenomics testing to empower better heart health. Our mission through PRECISE Pharmacogenomics is to help patients and healthcare providers optimize cardiovascular care with the power of genetics.
